Please help us settle this.

Dear Reader,

How do you say this:

Is it pronounced "egg" or "aig"?

Or this:

"leg" or "laig"? Adam and I have had some...confusion...shall we say about my way (the right way, incidentally) and his way of saying these words. Please help us out. But only if you agree with me. Thanks for your help.

XOXO,

The Management

It's "aig" and "laig"!

Simon would say it is OBVIOUSLY AN "EGG" AND A "LEG".

Only really vain, self-centered people find a way to sneak "I" into such words.

my vote is egg and leg. But I also pronounce "aunt" as it should be and not "ant". Call me crazy.

+2 for "aig" and "laig." (+3 if you count the one who can't talk yet.)

Ya'll are in Texas now, if you want to be understood, add that extra vowel, and the occasional extra syllable. :')

Both Brian and I agree that it is "egg" and "leg" but we would still understand you if you said it the other way. How about the word often? Do you pronounce the "t". I say no but I hear it all the time.

I'm with the "aig" and "laig" group!

the extra i makes the words sound extra whiney. LEG AND EGG!

I didn't realize that there was a question here. It's obviously aig and laig... unless you're British.

As a former first grade teacher, I can tell you that short e is pronounced like it is in elephant. It's a simple consonant vowel consonant pattern in leg and therefore should be pronounced "leg". If it had a long vowel, it would have a silent e at the end. If you were 6 years old, I would tell you to sound it out, but you are not, so I won't. In the case of egg, whenever there is a vowel that is followed by double letters, it is a short vowel too. I know you may think I am crazy, but Hooked On Phonics worked for me and it can for you too!
